Can you say Indie? Vol 2!

That's right, it is finally out. And just in time; I am leaving on Friday for Jamaica. After I made my selections for the cd, I realized that many songs featured prominent violins or cellos, hence the "Attack of the Strings" sub-title. Here is the track list, including a couple that didn't quite make the cut, but deserve honourable mention. And, as always, I can send a copy of the cd your way via request. Enjoy!

Can you say Indie? Vol 2: Attack of the Strings

  1. Kerfuffle - Ladyfuzz
  2. Commercial Breakdown - The Sunshine Underground
  3. Annie, Let's Not Wait - Guillemots
  4. Dumb Dumb Ditty - Farrah
  5. Dream Song - Passing Stranger
  6. Before I Fall To Pieces - Razorlight
  7. Cannonballs - Elsinore
  8. Carbon Monoxide - Regina Spektor
  9. Relief - Chris Garneau
  10. Sackcloth In Ashes - Small Leaks Sink Ships
  11. Naive - The Kooks
  12. Valerie - The Zutons
  13. Welcome, Ghost - Explosions In The Sky
  14. Pictures - Sia
  15. Candylion - Gruff Rhys
  16. Curse Your Little Heart - DeVotchKa
  17. Children of December - The Slip
  18. Souvenirs - Architecture In Helsinki
  19. In Shock - Kristin Hersh
  20. Me Plus One - Kasabian
Honourable mention:
  • Dancing Shoes - Artic Monkeys (the "Matt likes to Mambo" version)
  • Truman - Ratatat
  • This is a Song - The Magic Numbers
  • The End's Not Near - Band of Horses
  • Starz In Their Eyes - Just Jack
  • No Emotion - Idlewild
  • I'm A Rat - Towers of London
  • Heart of Hearts - !!!
  • A Bad Dream - Keane
  • Damage - Cooper Temple Clause
  • Do It First - The Crayon Fields
  • And seriously, there was a bunch more...
As you can see, I debated thoroughly each song, and I really couldn't make up my mind. I seriously considered a double cd compilation, but I didn't want to start that trend, so one cd it stays. But, if you have a chance, check out these bands and/or songs.

can you say bestest looking coverman ever? also, the rainbow hair definitely fits the time period of aurthur and his knights of the round table... in fact, i'm sure that if you look up some historical documents you might find something like this "and thou shalt have hair like the rainbow, so that all might knoweth thou humbleness and awesomeness" or perhaps "and the greatest of all know warriors was rob, master of his bladed craft, honorable and dead sexy to boot... thou shalt acknowledge his niftyness by praising him and giving him five dollars the next time you see him..."

YAAAAAAAY! At last, the impatient indie kids can be appeased, music critics can be freed from their cynicism regarding “music these days,” and Jess can stop listening to “Gravity’s Rainbow” on repeat. And while Rob’s hair perhaps tops the pointy Statue of Liberty-esque style featured on Volume 1 in terms of ostentation, his multihued hairdo is a little disconcerting in combination with his ferocious grimace and brandishing of a jagged weapon. Rob the Knight’s outer appearance certainly parallels his inner-self; he is a definite sadist. Just for the record, knights are characteristically very honourable individuals who wouldn’t dare have common folk bequeath upon them any alms (even a mere five dollars). It is apparent that Rob the Knight, in addition to being a medieval sword-wielder, is an evil clown. This makes for a ghastly amalgamation; I’m glad that Crystal never made Rob dye his hair as he had promised to when she dyed hers.

Regardless of Rob’s grisly façade on the cover, the release of the greatly anticipated Can You Say Indie? Volume 2 really is quite thrilling. To be honest, I’m shocked that Pitchfork made no mention of it today. How is Yoko Ono’s latest entry into the music arena more newsworthy than CYSI? Vol 2? I’m pretty sure that Yoko Ono doesn’t play a stringed instrument, nor does her voice resemble that of Brandon Flowers as the voices of certain lead singers of The Sunshine Underground do. It’s equally unfortunate that CYSI? Vol 1 was not suitably recognized at the Grammys, but Rob’s appearance on the cover of this edition will undoubtedly remedy this and garner some attention at next year’s awards. David Suzuki would like a copy, please.

P.S. When Can You Say Indie? is abbreviated, it closely resembles CSI. A useless fact, yes, but a true one nonetheless.
P.P.S. Quotes from Regina Spektor have definitely taken Traversing the Path up a notch.
